Fall Trends
Even though the temperatures in New England haven’t dipped too low just yet, you can feel it coming. The cold that is. And with the cold comes sweaters, coats, boots, mittens, hats…. the list goes on. I have to admit this is not my favorite time of year. Having to convince my children to put on extra layers before heading out in the morning is a form of torture I’m not fond of. The transition from shorts to sweatpants is brutal! And while I don’t have the same vicious reaction when it comes to transitioning into my Fall/Winter wardrobe, I’m still not happy about it.
In an effort to practice some retail therapy and get into the season, I’m looking to add some of the latest style trends to my closet. Most of these trends will sound familiar. Some of them are a continuation of what started last season, and some are reminiscent of a time long ago (fashion has a way of coming back around again). Here is the breakdown:
Vince Camuto Loafers (similar pair available here)
(Penny) Loafers: Yes, these are back in a variety of forms. Really loafers in general but I find when I say “Penny” Loafers that really solidifies the image of what’s trending. These styles now exist with a platform or heel in almost any color and material you can imagine. These shoes are very versatile and being worn with jeans/ skirts/ dresses, both casual and dressed up.
Long/Oversized Plaid Blazers: I am finding these blazers everywhere. There are lots of combinations of textures and prints. I find they are working more like a coat for a fall outfit that doesn’t need a warmer jacket. But could definitely carry you through the winter months as a statement piece in your wardrobe.
Elastic waistband on Evereve Top
Elastic (everywhere): The summer smocking trend hasn’t gone far. If anything it’s expanded into the next season. Not only smocking but elastic everywhere as a detail. Fall trends will find elastics on your sleeves at your wrist, at the neckline, at your waist, on your ankles. Whether it’s a top with elastic waist or jogger pants with elastic waist and ankles, this trend is strong. I think mostly this is a welcome trend, as the give in our clothing is a welcome addition and provides a little comfort to our wardrobe.
Flannel Button Down: This trend started to gain some traction last winter as a more popular options even though it’s been “around” for a long time. I’ve seen the current continue to carry into this fall. These are great as go to in your wardrobe to pair with jeans for all your casual needs.
Chunky Knit Cardigan: This has always been an option but now it’s trend. You can find these cardigans at all your favorite retail shops. My recommendation is to pick a color that works well in your wardrobe as a neutral to get the most versatility out of it!
Animal Prints: These are always around in the background somewhere. Now, they are in the forefront everywhere. In the land of fashion, animal prints are considered a neutral. Pair them with anything and be on your way! One trendy example of an animal print dress is available here!
Leopard Print Heels (similar pair available here)
Animal Print Blouse (similar style available here)
These are just a few of the many trends you’ll find in store today. You can add slipdress/skirt, leather, pleats, turtlenecks and corduroy to this list just for starters. You’ll notice there is a lot of texture. This can add dimension to your outfit. I would recommend being thoughtful about pairings. Chances are you do this already without even realizing it. For example, a slip skirt with a chunky knit cardigan would go well. They offset each other. A chucky cardigan with wide leg corduroys may not work well together (both are thick and heavy textures).
The idea isn’t to add all of these trends to your wardrobe but rather to pick the ones that work best for you and your current closet. Some of these trends may already exist in your wardrobe from previous seasons. Find the trends that you can easily fold into what you already have. Find items you love and that will be the key to helping you feel confident this season!
