A Casual Start to Summer
Summer 2023 has felt like a constant rain threat. Only in the last couple of weeks has the sun been a bit more consistent in our forecast. This is especially true of our weekends. With all this rain, I’ve barely had the chance to enjoy my backyard patio much less build in any beach time. But I do feel like we’re finally getting a better stretch of weather which is helping get me in the right mindset to enjoy the rest of my summer (which in turn will be over in a blink - don’t mind my pessimism).
With this in mind my summer wardrobe has been a bit muted. I’ve been closer to casual warm weather wear than vacation vibes outfits. But I realize that a more casual feel to my outfit choices makes sense for this summer. Perhaps you’re getting comfortable in a more casual space as well? If so, I have some recommendations.
Pants are having a moment:
The latest trends in pants are learning toward higher waists. Making this work can be a challenge (especially for those of us who are petite). The higher waist can elongate the leg but may also require a shorter or “crop” top that can flatter a shortened torso. If you don’t have shorter tops, you can always go with tucking it in (also on trend this season). There is also a wide leg trend in pants that can be both flattering and comfortable if you find the right fit. When looking for wide leg bottoms opt for flowy fabrics that will carry less bulk.

Pay attention to the details:
I’ve always preferred clothes with a little detail. A ruffle sleeve, piping on the pant leg, even a drawstring can add an extra detail to a piece that helps it stand out. Details like ruching or smocking can go a long way towards flattering your torso or elevating an outfit. Popular this season there are loads of items with all these details available. The key is to find what flatters you.
Criss Cross Details:
I’ve always loved a sandal with a criss cross straps. Some years they are easier to find than others. With that said, this is my year! They are everywhere and they can be very flattering. The biggest complaint I hear is that the strap doesn’t land on a comfortable place on your foot. If that’s the case, it’s reason enough to move on to the next pair. Not all these shoes have straps that land in the same place so you may have to try on a few different pairs to find the one that’s right for you.
The quality of your fabric matters:
I gravitate towards cotton fabric for my summer clothing. It’s lightweight and breathable which makes for a nice combination in warmer temperatures. Pay attention to the labels on the clothing that you purchase. Certain fabrics will collect your sweat and start to smell over time. Others will show sweat stains under your armpits. Some white fabrics will look yellow after washing multiple times, other will fade. Some will even shrink while others will loose their elasticity and shape. In general, you get what you pay for so look for quality fabrics when you can. It’s also important to care for your pieces so they will last one season to the next.
