Summer Trends

It’s only May but I would say that the upcoming summer trends are already shaping up for summer. You have likely started to see the trends too. First off… smocking! It’s everywhere. Dresses, tops and jumpsuits are all reflecting the smocking trend for summer. Sandal slides are also a hit trend. Either in flat or platform, these easy summer sandals come in different colors and styles. Also, tie shoulder straps are showing up on a variety of clothing items. Chances are you already own one or more of these trends but if not, you soon will.

Smocking can be hit or miss. Depending on the item and where the smocking detail hits, it may or may not be flattering. Not every dress is meant to flatter every body. It’s important to try on different styles to see what will work best for you! I was a little nervous to try smocking myself because I originally thought it might work better for smaller breasts. Not true. Smocking can definitely look flattering on larger breasts. It’s more a question of making sure it hits the right places for your frame.

Slides are not necessarily new to the party. These shoes were in style last summer as well. In fact, I have a pair of Steve Madden slide sandals that I wore all summer long last year. I wore these versatile sandals with dresses, jeans, shorts, capri, wide leg pants….. you name it! I tried to find a replacement pair to get me started this summer but haven’t had much luck. Instead I found a pair of sandal slides with crisscross straps that appears to be perfectly on trend for the season.

Finally the tie shoulder trend is one of my favorites. Over the years I’ve had a variety of tie shoulder tops for the summer. I love the feminine feel of a good bow. I was always a girly girl so bows are natural to me. Although now that I think of it, these ties/bows aren't just appearing on shoulders. I’ve been noticing ties in the back too! However, unlike the shoulder tie, the back tie trend is not one that I will be participating in. The main reason for this is because I am not comfortable going without a bra. The tie in the back could hid your bra if it’s thick enough and placed correctly but I’m a bit too lazy for all that coordination. So, I recognize the trend is not for me and I move on. Although if you’re up for it, I think it looks great and could be very fun.

As much as I know we’re all looking forward to the warmer weather which can’t arrive fast enough, I’m also excited for the summer fashion. Much gets hidden under jackets when it’s cold but in the summer sunshine we really get to appreciate all the effort in those outfits! So as you pull out all those summer clothes that have been in bins for far too long, keep an eye out for the trendy pieces that will look chic and perfectly on trend for the season!
